In the northernmost part of the United States, lies the richest state in America. As one of the 13 colonies that revolted against the British, Connecticut is also rich in history and culture. This New England state is small in comparison, but has a variety of scenery like beautiful beaches, rolling hills, historic inns and beautiful state parks.
Connecticut is divided into several major sectors, Fairfield County, Litchfield Hills, New Haven and Mystic County. Since the state is such close proximity to New York City, those who want to make their home away from the hustle and bustle of the big city settle in Fairfield County. The city of Fairfield is known for its very low crime rate and is the 2nd safest city in the country. The lower portion of the county is known as the Gold Coast and because of its proximity, is considered part of the New York metropolitan area. The Litchfield Hills region is known for its traditional New England scenery, which is in distinct contrast to the rest of the state, which is more urbanized and suburbanized. This area is contains the bulk of Connecticut's wineries. New Haven is home to Yale, one of the most prestigious universities in the nation. In addition, cultural landmarks such as the Peabody Museum of Natural History and Schubert playhouse are also located in New Haven. The last area, Mystic County infuses countryside, culture and casinos with activities for everyone.
Connecticut's board of education is one of the most steadfast in the country, bringing the high school dropout rate down to 1.4% and a 92 % graduation rate, which increases steadily each year. In addition to Yale, Connecticut has 23 major universities and community colleges including the University of Connecticut or as it's commonly known, UConn. UConn is the top ranked public university in New England and is the only school in the area with its own schools of law, social work, medicine and dentistry.
